The view from Sebastian: a focus on Pukkapedia

26th juli 2014

I wanted to use my regular piece in Pukka Planet to talk about one of the most important parts of our new site - the Pukkapedia. It’s just what it says it is; an encyclopedia of all the plants we use in our colourful herbal teas and organic wellbeing supplements. We share some insight of where the plants come from, who grows them and some little historical tit-bits of interest. It's the best place to see what the plants look like at all their stages of growth. We have collected thousands of incredible images from all the visits we have made to the farms and wild collection areas and hope you marvel in them as much as we do. There is nothing like seeing the incredible symmetrical patterns and kaleidoscopic colours of plants to truly connect you with the wonder of nature.

Of course, we would love to tell you about some of their amazing properties and how they have been used in human culture for hundreds of years. We would love to share the wisdom that our ancestors accumulated over hundreds of generations so you too can be a holder of this knowledge.  However, unfortunately, because of restrictive legal regulations in Europe and the UK we are not allowed to even tell you some of the most basic insights. Unless a product is licensed as a medicine or has an ‘authorised health claim’ (hardly any do) any indication that a herb has some benefits would put us at odds with the law.

Watch out for news here  about all other things herbal at Pukka Planet or sign up below to hear it first. In the meantime, why not read Rob Verkerk’s fascinating series of articles on food supplements, herbs and the legal labyrinth that surrounds them.

Sebastian Pole, Sebastian Pole, Co-founder and Master Herbsmith

Hello There. I’m a Co-founder and the Master Herbsmith at Pukka Herbs. As well as having the most amazing job of formulating all our organic teas and supplements I am a passionate environmentalist – that’s why we are 100% organic, pioneers in sustainably sourcing herbs with FairWild, and we give 1% of our turnover for rejuvenating the Planet. I also run my own herbal practice in Bath which I’ve done since 1998. I practise an eclectic blend of Ayurvedic, Chinese and Western Herbal Medicine and am a registered member of the Ayurvedic Practitioners Association, Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine and the Unified Register of Herbal Practitioners. I love using the principles of Ayurveda (aka the ancient art of living wisely) – coupled with insights of traditional healing and modern science - to help create the best of health. Inspired by my time in India, I love cooking a vegetarian feast and rely on regular yoga practice with lots of herbal teas and tonics to keep me well. I am passionate about running a business that inspires positive change and brings the benefit of the incredible power of plants to everyone we connect with – from our farmers, collectors, Pukka team to you. I live on a two acre garden-farm in Somerset where I grow a rainbow spectrum of medicinal and nourishing plants for my bees and family to thrive on.
